Sandstone for Tiling, Paving or Cladding

If you are working on the insides or outsides of your home then we are sure you are not unfamiliar with the terms ‘tiling’, ‘paving’ or ‘cladding’. Most of the times, you will hear these terms being used for each other interchangeably. But the fact is that tiling, paving and cladding are different things, and it is important to know the difference.

The experts at Sandstone World, Brisbane have gathered to give you a little introduction on each of the 3 terms one by one.

Tiling

Tiling is usually done indoors. Tiling relates to putting tiles on a surface such as floors, walls, countertops, and other surfaces for practical or decorative purposes. Tiles are made from various kind of materials, which include ceramics, glass, metal, marble etc. Tiles require grouting to hold them in place, and are usually thin because they’re mostly used as surface coverings.

Pavers & Tiles

Paving

Paving is very similar to tiling, but entirely different in the aspect that it relates to surface coverings on exteriors. Pavers are relatively larger in size than tiles and are used on patios, driveways and other outdoors areas of your property. Pavers are also usually thicker than conventional tiles and do not require grouting to hold them in place. Instead, a foundation with concrete and sand on top is laid down before pavers are placed in a pattern of your liking.

Cladding

Cladding is rather very different from tiling or paving in the way that it is not used for surface coverings, per se. Instead it refers to a material being applied on top of an already existing surface. Also, the basic motive for cladding is to protect the layer beneath from the elements of nature. Cladding is mostly done on the exteriors of structures and offers only basic level protection from natural elements. Moreover, it can also act as sound or thermal insulator, and are usually easy to clean.

There you have it, the difference between tiling, paving and cladding made simple for you. Now that you know the difference between the three, you’d know what to do when working on your residential or commercial project and what would be the right way to do it.
